Statement of account
Also called Customer statement
A statement of account lists a customer’s invoices, payments and credits over a period and shows the balance they owe.
A statement of account summarises a customer’s position: the opening balance, each invoice, credit note and payment in the period, and the closing balance — usually split into current and overdue amounts.
Statements help customers who receive many invoices. One document lets their accounts-payable team reconcile their ledger against yours, spot invoices they never received, and pay everything due in one run.
Send them on a regular cycle, such as monthly, not only when chasing. A mismatch caught early — an invoice they never got, a payment you haven’t applied — is far cheaper to fix than one discovered at 90 days.
Example
A monthly statement shows an opening balance of £9,200, two new invoices of £3,000 each, a payment of £9,200 and a closing balance of £6,000, none of it overdue.
